Why Office Work Hurts: What Research Tells Us About Desk-Based Pain

If you work at a desk, chances are you’ve felt it — that nagging neck tension, aching lower back, or tight shoulders that creep in by the end of the day. You’re not imagining it, and it’s not just “part of the job.”
Recent research exploring musculoskeletal pain in office-based university staff highlights just how common — and complex — work-related pain really is.
At Health Wise Chiropractic, we see this every day. Let’s look at what the science is telling us and what it means for your body.
Musculoskeletal Pain Is a Workplace Epidemic
Musculoskeletal disorders are now the second leading cause of disability worldwide. Office workers are among the most affected due to:
Prolonged sitting
Repetitive computer use
Static postures
Poor ergonomic setups
High mental workload
In this large university-based study, 66% of staff reported musculoskeletal pain within the past 12 months — a striking reminder that desk work is far from “low risk.”
The Most Common Problem Areas
The study found the most frequently affected regions were:
Lower back (55%)
Neck (51%)
Upper back (49%)
These are exactly the areas we commonly assess and treat in office-based patients — and for good reason.
Prolonged sitting and screen use change how your spine moves, how your muscles activate, and how your nervous system processes strain.
It’s Not Just Sitting — It’s How You Sit
One of the strongest findings in this research was not simply time spent at work — it was time spent in uncomfortable postures.
The biggest risk factor for pain?➡️ Maintaining awkward or uncomfortable positions for long periods
This includes:
Slouched sitting
Forward head posture
Leaning into a laptop
Twisting or reaching repeatedly
Holding static positions without breaks
Even a “good” chair can’t protect you if your body isn’t moving.
Screen Time and Repetitive Tasks Matter
The study showed higher pain rates in staff who:
Used computers for more than 5 hours per day
Performed repetitive hand or wrist movements
Bent or twisted the trunk repeatedly
Walked long distances between work areas
Alternated between prolonged sitting and standing
Your body is designed for variety, not repetition — even low-load tasks can strain tissues when done for hours.
Stress and Time Pressure Increase Pain
Interestingly, psychological factors played a role too.
Pain was more common in people who:
Had to rush to meet deadlines
Could not choose when to take breaks
Why does this matter?
Stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, increasing muscle tension — particularly in the neck and shoulders — and reduces your body’s ability to recover between tasks. When mental stress combines with physical strain, pain risk rises sharply.
Sleep Matters More Than You Think
Staff who slept fewer hours reported significantly higher pain levels.
Sleep is when your nervous system:
Processes pain
Restores tissue health
Regulates inflammation
Improves stress resilience
Poor sleep doesn’t just make pain feel worse — it increases the likelihood of pain developing in the first place.
Job Satisfaction Alone Isn’t Enough
While most participants reported good job satisfaction, it did not protect them from pain.
This highlights an important point:You can enjoy your job and still experience physical overload if your body isn’t supported properly.
What This Means for Office Workers
This research reinforces what modern pain science already shows:
Pain is multifactorial
Ergonomics, movement, stress, sleep, and nervous system health all matter
Static postures are more damaging than movement
Recovery is just as important as workload
How Chiropractic Care Can Help
At Health Wise Chiropractic, we take a whole-person approach to desk-based pain by:
Improving spinal mobility and posture awareness
Reducing nervous system overload
Addressing muscle tension and joint stiffness
Supporting better movement patterns
Educating patients on ergonomic and movement strategies
Chiropractic care isn’t just about short-term relief — it’s about helping your body adapt better to modern work demands.
The Takeaway
Office pain is common — but it’s not inevitable.
Research shows that:
Prolonged uncomfortable postures are a key driver of pain
Stress, poor sleep, and limited movement increase risk
Pain is influenced by both physical and nervous system factors
Targeted interventions can reduce discomfort and improve function
If your workday leaves you stiff, sore, or exhausted, your body is asking for support — not rest alone.
We’re here to help you move better, work smarter, and feel stronger.
