Exploring the Links Between Antioxidant Vitamin Intake and Mental Health
Approximately 50% of all adult mental disorders begin by age 14, with the prevalence of anxiety symptoms emerging before the age of 10
Psychosomatic complaints are physical symptoms (like pains) that appear to be triggered or worsened by psychological factors (such as mental health complaints)
For example, anxiety manifests through excessive worry, fear, and emotional distress (psychological symptoms) but also through headaches and stomach aches (physical symptoms)
Unfortunately, girls appear more prone to experiencing these physical expressions of emotional distress compared to boys
How do food and vitamins affect mental health?
The available evidence suggests that high-quality dietary patterns rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and fish may be linked to lower odds of depression
Dietary antioxidants have garnered interest as important nutrients that fight oxidative stress and inflammation, which are processes also implicated in the development of neuropsychiatric diseases such as anxiety and depression
A 2025 study looked at Vitamin C, Vitamin E and B-Carotene
B Carotene was found to be the most effective on anxiety score, fewer psychosomatic symptoms and higher quality of life
Vitamin C showed fewer psychosomatic problems
Vitamin E failed to show a significant difference
