Chronic Low Back Pain: Its Unseen Impact on Standing and Daily Life

Low Back Pain has been associated with altered body sway when we are standing.

Up to 85% of adults have some low back pain at some point in their life.

When the pain is acute ( under 12 weeks) and manual therapy and exercise are performed, you may get relief, however, some people have complicated cases or leave it too long to get treatment and their pain becomes chronic ( over 12 weeks) and this leads to an increase in disability in normal activity and limitations at work, school, and sport.

Research shows up to 71.6 Billion dollars per year is spent/lost on low back pain due to health care costs and missed work days.

How Chronic Low Back Pain affects Standing
How Chronic Low Back Pain affects Standing

People with low back pain often restrict trunk movement to reduce low back pain

Over time, the change in postural control reduces reliance on lumbar (low back) proprioception. In the long term, this can lead to a greater dependence on other sensory information to compensate for the loss of proprioception

A reason we sway is this alteration in proprioception from the lumbar spine, goes to the ankles, and controlling posture at the ankles INCREASES the magnitude of sway

The research also conclude that people with chronic low back pain showed INCREASED postural sway during standing, They also found the activation of the gluteus medius muscle is also an area that needs to be addressed, another reason to visit your local Chiro!
