Understanding the Causes of Gas in Infants: A Guide for New Parents

There are 2 sources: Harmless bacteria breaking down undigested sugars in the large intestine AND swallowing air during crying and feeding

Mums can lessen their gas-forming vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, beans, and onions

Feeding babies too much fruit juice can also cause gas, bloating, and tummy pain

Why do babies spit up after feedings?

Gastroesophageal reflux is when things like saliva air and stomach acids back up into the esophagus and sometimes the mouth

GER usually occurs AFTER eating when the lower oesophageal sphincter muscle is relaxed (this muscle separates the esophagus from the stomach

This usually occurs at around 4 months old and most outgrow this by 12 months of age

Is maintaining your care worth it?

A helpful tip is cows milk may cause an allergic reaction and can mimic the symptoms

To decrease GER , keep your baby as upright as possible during feedings, avoid bouncing your baby and keep the nappy loose to reduce pressure on the abdomen
