Understanding Wear and Tear of Multifidus Muscle and its Potential Impact on Lumbar Spine Degeneration

Understanding Wear and Tear of Multifidus Muscle and its Potential Impact on Lumbar Spine Degeneration

The Multifidus muscle stabilises the vertebrae as the spine moves

- it is an important core muscle stabiliser and is involved in static and dynamic spinal stability

The erector Spinae runs along the lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine

- its function is to straighten the back and provide side-to-side rotation

- VERY common in my practice as a cause of back pain

The research has found that Multifius atrophy is SIGNIFICANT in degenerative lumbar Spondylosis thesis compared with degenerative lumbar kyphosis

Degenerative lumbar kyphosis patients showed more significant atrophy of the erector spinae muscle
