Sleep Deprivation and the effect on weight loss

A duration of 7 to 9 hours a night is appropriate for adults aged between 18-60

in 1910 the average sleep was 9 hours, in 1975 it was 7.5 hours and now the average is 7 hours a night

Sleep loss leads to a negative impact on

- process of thinking

- decreased learning

- problems with memory and recall capacity

Sleep deprivation can lead to

- increase risk of obesity

- increase likelihood of type 2 diabetes

- hypertension

- cardiovascular disease

Studies have shown that those who sleep under 6 hours a night has been associated with a HIGHER BODY MASS

restricting sleep for up to 5 yas has been shown to cause short term weight gain

How NUTRITION affects sleep and weight gain/loss

Short sleep duration is associated with higher energy intake , increased consumption of saturated fats, resulting in weight gain and increase in BMI

Increases in meals, snack and night time eating , low consumption of fruits and vegetables and higher intake of fast foods, sugar and fats results in sleep disturbances

An increase of 200 to 500 calories a day has been shown to impose sleep deprivation compared to those who have normal sleep duration

A study looked into two groups, BOTH had the same amount of calorie deficit but one group had 5.5 hours of sleep and one had 8.5 hours of sleep for 14 days

the group with less sleep lost the least amount of weight
