Low back pain is a GLOBAL problem with 84% of adults experiencing a low back episode at least once in their lifetime


It is the number one reason for Australians to retire early from work in their 50s


It ranks second only to the common cold as a reason for seeing a GP and 5th leading cause of hospital admissions.


Job-related factors that can lead to your lower back pain are:

- prolonged sitting (remember we should aim for under 6 hours of total sitting for the day)

- heavy lifting

- poor posture

- repetitive bending


Psychological elements that can lead to your lower back pain are:

- depression and anxiety

- obesity

- physical INACTIVITY

- Smoking

- aging

- being female Research from 2023 looked into subjects who were statistically more likely to develop low back pain and why.


Nearly 1 in 2 cases where WORK RELATED. So if you are in a job where there is a lack of movement or lots of repetitive movement, speak to your team about changing this.


Within the work-related category, Heavy lifting (26.3%), prolonged sitting (19.4%) and poor posture (27.9%) were the main factors leading to low back pain


OTHER risk factors researchers found were obesity (16.9%) and previous back injury (12.2%) where other relevant factors.


The most common symptoms of low back pain where

- difficulty standing or bending (73.0%)

- walking difficulties (67.7%)

- sleep disruptions (51.4%) and

- referral pains (45.8%)
