  • The cold truth: the role of cryotherapy in the treatment of injury and recovery from exercise

The cold truth: the role of cryotherapy in the treatment of injury and recovery from exercise After you do exercise, cryotherapy is indicated when rapid recovery is required between exercise bouts, as opposed to after routine training. Ultimately, the effectiveness of cryotherapy as a recovery modality is dependent upon its ability to maintain a reduction in muscle temperature and on the timing of treatment with respect to when the injury occurred, or the exercise ceased. Therefore, to limit the proliferation of secondary tissue damage that occurs in the hours after an injury or a strenuous exercise bout, it is imperative that cryotherapy be applied in abundance within the first few hours of structural damage. Hebert, Effectiveness of conservative non-pharmacologic therapies for pain, disability, physical capacity, and physical activity behaviour in patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 2021, For patients with LSS, there is low- to moderate-quality evidence that manual therapy with supervised exercises results in small improvements in short-term walking capacity, pain, and symptom severity compared to self-directed or group exercise. The choice between rehabilitation and surgery for LSS is very uncertain owing to the very low-quality of available evidence. Ergonomic exposures and development of musculoskeletal pain Ergonomic factors considered in the study were back bending, arm above shoulders, and lifting Workers with a high percentage of working time showed the largest increase in neck shoulder and low back pain intensity Workers with high exposure to more specific ergonomic facts had increased pain – these include long periods of standing, and walking combined with lifting/carrying and twist/bend Repetitive arm movements for the majority of the working time with or without standing/walking increased neck and shoulder pain. • Is dry needling effective for the management of plantar heel pain or plantar fasciitis

Is dry needling effective for the management of plantar heel pain or plantar fasciitis Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a piece of strong, thick tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. It connects the heel bone to the toes, creating the arch of the foot. Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain and can develop as a result of overstretching overuse, or a medical condition. Plantar fasciitis is often associated with a heel spur, a spike of bone poking out from the heel bone, although many people have heel spurs without any pain. Moderate to low evidence suggests a positive effect of TrP dry needling for improving pain intensity and pain-related disability in patients with plantar heel pain of musculoskeletal origin in the short- and long-term, respectively. • Do you find that your general willingness to do things is different with chronic low back pain ?

Do you find that your general willingness to do things is different with chronic low back pain ? Sense of effort is an important but rarely researched aspect of proprioception. We developed a novel force-matching paradigm for back muscles to test the sense of effort. Sense of effort is affected in people with low back pain. People with low back pain overestimate the trunk extension force they generate. Patients match forces accurately when the sense of effort deficit can be compensated. • How muscle strength activities could reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, Diabetes and mortality

How muscle strength activities could reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, Diabetes and mortality Current epidemiologic evidence suggests that engagement in muscle-strengthening activities over 1–2 sessions (or approximately 60–150 min) per week was associated with -reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (seven studies; approximately 20%–25% reduction), -type 2 diabetes (four studies; approximately 30% reduction), -cancer mortality (four studies; approximately 15%–20% reduction) -as well as all-cause mortality (six studies; approximately 20%–25% reduction). For diabetes, the risk appears to lower further with even higher levels of muscle-strengthening activities. But some studies for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality suggest a reversal whereby higher levels (≥2.5 h/week) have less benefit, or are even harmful, relative to lower levels of activity. The likely mechanisms contributing to a benefit include improvement in body composition, lipid profile, insulin resistance and inflammation. The evidence supports engaging in 1–2 sessions (up to 2.5 h) per week, preferably performed complementary to the recommended levels of aerobic MVPA. • Dry Needling or Kinesio Taping in muscle treatment ?

Dry Needling or Kinesio Taping in muscle treatment ? A 2022 study looked into the upper trapezius muscle and whether it would respond better to dry needling or Kinesio taping Muscle disorders are one of the main causes of pain, one in three patients have myofascial pain syndrome ( this is when trigger points develop in the skeletal muscles) We develop trigger points thanks to our sedentary lifestyle, as we spend most of our time in a static posture, in fact, research has shown that we sit for more than Half our day ( it should be less than 6 hours total) The trapezius muscles function is - stabilise the scapula - move the scapula - rotate the scapula and extend the neck The trapezius, when trigger points are present, can refer pain to - pain on the side of the neck - pain on the back of the neck - pain behind the ear - pain in your temples A major reason that people develop trap problems is a forward head posture The results were great for either option Both dry needling and Kinesio taping increased pressure pain threshold AND reduced muscle thickness We have been helping our community for over 10+ years with their muscle and spinal problems.
