- Maximising Range of Motion: The Benefits and Differences of Strength Training and Stretching
Maximising Range of Motion: The Benefits and Differences of Strength Training and Stretching Range of motion is the angle by which a joint move from its resting position to the extremities of its motion in any given direction Conditions that can negatively affect ROM are Ankylosing spondylitis, Cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis ROM is improved through increased stretch tolerance, augmented fascicle length, and changes in angle The study concluded that both Strength training and stretching were not different in their effects on ROM We have been helping our community for over 10+ years with their muscle and spinal problems. - The Truth About Stretching: Is It Really Effective?
The Truth About Stretching: Is It Really Effective? Stretching exercises are an integral part of rehabilitation and sport. Despite this, the mechanism behind its proposed effect remains ambiguous. It is assumed that flexibility increases, e.g., action on muscle and tendon, respectively, but this is not always present in the stretching protocol of the exercises used. Recently, the fasciae have increased in popularity, and seems that they can have a role in defining flexibility and the perception of the limitation of the maximal range of motion (ROM). Deep fascia is also considered a key element to transmit load in parallel bypassing the joints and transmitting around 30% of the force generated during a muscular contraction. Results from recent research show that static stretching can induce an increase in the overall stretch tolerance, which can help the muscles and tendons involved, as well as the fasciae of the anatomical region We have been helping our community for over 10+ years with their muscle and spinal problems. - The Benefits and Importance of Stretching before and after Exercise
The Benefits and Importance of Stretching before and after Exercise When we talk about flexibility, we are talking about the ABILITY to move through the FULL joint range of motion Stretching is an intervention to improve flexibility and achieve other goals There are different types of stretching, including - active static stretching (active lengthening of a muscle until the feeling of stretch or to the point of discomfort) - passive static stretching ( external force is applied) -dynamic stretching (controlled movements through the joint range of motion) - proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation ( combining passive stretching with isometric contractions) Let's first talk about, do you have to stretch in the warm-ups. The latest thinking according to research is YES you can warm up but you dont have to. The reasoning is that stretching during the warm-up can improve the acute improvements in range of motion, and proprioception and reduce the chance of injury. Static stretching and passive stretching can impair acute performance in power strength and speed-related activities Stretching in the cool-down phase Can you stretch, YES, do you have to stretch, the research says it does NOT enhance recovery. The research shows some participants FEEL better, but when it's actually measurable, no improvements are noted. Range of motion improvements you CAN stretch to improve your range of motion, do you have to stretch to improve your range of motion, possible NOT. Stretching improves the fascicle length, improves stretch tolerance, and reduces tonic reflex activity BUT is not the only method for doing so. Other alternatives are resistance training and foam rolling exercise Reducing injury risk Stretching won't increase your risk of injury, do you have to stretch, probably not. - most research shows there is no clear effect of static stretching or passive stretching reducing injuries. - Unlock Your Tight Hamstrings: The Benefits of Stretching for Improved Flexibility
Unlock Your Tight Hamstrings: The Benefits of Stretching for Improved Flexibility The hamstrings are a big muscle group that flex the knee joint and extend the hip This helps our body walk, run and climb Tight hamstrings can be caused by sitting too long ( remember from our other blog, we should aim for less than 6 hours a day ), hamstring curl exercises, sports like soccer and tennis, and poor posture. Research looked into how long you should stretch to improve the hamstring muscle A 30-second duration is an effective amount of time to increase the range of motion of the hamstring muscle NO increase in flexibility occurred when the duration was doubled from 30 to 60 seconds. NO improvements were seen when the frequency was increased from one to three times per day. We have been helping our community for over 10+ years with their muscle and spinal problems . - Can Heat Therapy With Stretching Help You Move More Freely?
Can Heat Therapy With Stretching Help You Move More Freely? The application of HEAT to muscles is commonly used to increase our patient's ability to stretch better and longer Stretching aims to gain, maintain, and restore muscle flexibility in symptomatic or asymptomatic populations The goal of stretching includes - maximising sports performance - preventing injury - minimising age-related loss of flexibility - recovering range of motion following injury or lack of movement - muscle soreness relief Although the research isn't consistent on the effects of stretching, researchers looked into the application of heat on a stretch to see what happens Potential mechanisms to which heat COULD enhance the results of stretching are - increased tissue temperature - increased blood flow - reduced muscle activity - affecting type 1 collagen (which provides the main passive resistance component in muscle tissue, which becomes more extensive with an increase in temperature. The researchers concluded - Heat can provide an influence on the acute gain of range of motion (less than 12-week old injury) - a sustained gain of range of motion with more treatments in healthy people. - Fix Your Posture in No Time: The Ultimate Guide to Stretching and Strength Training
Fix Your Posture in No Time: The Ultimate Guide to Stretching and Strength Training Upright posture is ESSENTIAL for human movement and participation in our activities of daily living This mean we need good posture to make sure we can sleep well, cook food, put clothes on and do our daily exercise The STRENGTH of the spine arises from its FOUR natural curves , cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral. For muscles to work efficiently and maintain an upright posture , the THORACIC SPINE attains approximately 20-29 degree curvatures from childhood into our 3rd decade When the curve is over 40 degrees, thats what its too curvy and is called hyperkyphosis Hyperkyphosis increases graviites leverage on the spine and puts stress on the spine and muscles. From the age of 20, over 1 in 3 people have hyperkyphosis and the rate only increases with age. The adverse effects with hyperkyphosis are - pain - slower gait - reduced balance - increased body sway - increase risk of falls Research looked into multiple studies and found that stretching the BACK EXTENSOR MUSCLES and lengthening the ANTERIOR CHEST MUSCLES lead to an improvement with patients hyperkyphosis Hopefully this inspires you to stetch between your Chiropractic adjustments, and remmeber all your stretches are available online with our online health program, stand corrected! - "Can Stretching or Strengthening Exercise Improve Spinal and Lumbopelvic Posture?"
"Can Stretching or Strengthening Exercise Improve Spinal and Lumbopelvic Posture?" Abnormal posture (e.g. loss of lordosis) has been associated with the occurrence of musculoskeletal pain. Stretching tight muscles while strengthening the antagonists represents the most common method to treat the assumed muscle imbalance. Spinal alignment and posture have been investigated for about 250 years Research has found a strong cross-sectional relationship between reduced lumbar lordosis and low back pain Changes in lumbopelvic or spinal posture are commonly related to muscle imbalance . Such imbalance is suggested to originate from extended periods of biomechanical, psychological and social stresses as well as repetitive activities While some muscles respond with tightness or shortening, their antagonists may become too weak to maintain the normal joint position Researchers looked into whether you should stretch OR strengthening programs would be better for muscle imbalance. They found in contrast to popular beliefs in practice, moderate-certainty evidence does not support the use of stretching when aiming to tackle imbalance-related posture deficits The study revealed a large effect of strengthening which also was superior in direct comparison to stretching. As a consequence, exercise therapy for posture can be substantially economized by forgoing stretching tight muscles and instead focusing on strengthening weakened muscles. From a physiological point of view, it has been argued that chronic stretching of a tight or shortened muscle would lower its stiffness or tone. While stretching of two to eight minutes acutely reduced muscle stiffness For more information about how we can help. - Can Cupping Therapy Relieve Muscle Tension and Pain?
Can Cupping Therapy Relieve Muscle Tension and Pain? Cupping can be quickly described as a technique to allow for muscle relaxation. The technique involves placing cups over the skin that creates negative pressure through suction There are two types of cupping - Dry cupping is noninvasive with no bloodletting - Wet cupping is invasive and includes bloodletting The high-pressure suction leads to increased blood volume, increased capillary filtration rate, and the expulsion of filtered and interstitial fluid in the area The filtered fluid contains inflammatory mediators Then by stimulating inflammatory cell migration, the following occurs - increased blood flow - removal of toxins - the restoration of neuroendocrine balance - improved oxygen supply and - tissue perfusion We have been helping our community for over 10+ years with their muscle and spinal problems . How Cupping Therapy Can Alleviate Chronic Back Pain Chronic back pain causes physical, emotional, and socioeconomic changes Research is showing can be effective in the relief of chronic pain, for those new to our blogs, we have discussed what chronic pain is but put simply, it is pain that has lasted for at least 12 weeks When it comes to pain, I always remind people that pain is the LAST sign of dysfunction but is the FIRST thing to go. But it puts in perspective if you take several months to get your pain looked at by a Chiropractor, it just added more time to your recovery and increases your chances of getting into a chronic pain situation Most patients receive cupping in the low back and cervical regions Most cupping sessions averaged around 5 sessions to get the best results The most effective timing was 8 minutes The range of cupping was from 5 to 10 minutes Sometimes the residual marks can last from 1 to 10 days When we apply to cups, we put the cups over the trigger points, these trigger points are specific points of high irritability , they are highly sensitive to digital pressure and can trigger local and referred pain We have been helping our community for over 10+ years with their muscle and spinal problems .
