Let's Talk About Mental Health: The Connection Between Diet and Depression-Anxiety Research shows that diet can improve depression but to a less of extent anxiety. Sixteen randomized controlled trials were included in the analysis, though it should be stated that most of the people in the studies did not meet the criteria for the diagnosis of clinical depression. Even so, the dietary intervention was effective in having a small, but meaningful effect in lowering depression symptoms. For anxiety, there was no improvement seen with dietary changes. There was no single diet. Many different approaches were used across the interventions. Importantly, there were no differences in depression outcomes between dietary interventions primarily aimed at reducing body weight, improving nutrition, or decreasing dietary fat intake. The Price of Poor Rest: Exploring the Numerous Risks of Not Sleeping Well The research looked at different sleep sections and divided over 4000 people into 4 groups: people with a “very short” sleep duration of fewer than 6 hours , people who slept 6-8 hours, a normal sleep duration of 7-8 hours, and then a group of people who had a long sleep duration of more than 8 hours. They also looked at their cardiovascular health – how much fatty plaque they had built up in the arteries of their heart and body. And they took out factors that could have confused the results, like how often the person exercised and whether they smoked. What they found was having a very short sleep duration, under six hours a night, was associated with a higher risk of having early fatty plaque buildup in the body’s arteries. Why Sleep Problems Are More Likely to Cause Musculoskeletal Pain in Boys Than Girls In a prospective cohort study of Australian schoolchildren (n = 1239, mean age 9 years), the associations between sleep problems at baseline and new onset of both musculoskeletal pain and persistent musculoskeletal pain (pain lasting > 3 months) 1 year later were investigated using logistic regression. The one-year incidence proportion for musculoskeletal pain onset is 43% and 7% for persistent musculoskeletal pain.
